Genetics and Heredity Unit
In this unit we will be using a layered curriculum to discover how the characteristics of organisms are influenced by heredity and environment.

I can compare how characteristics of living things are passed on through generations, both asexually and sexually.

I can demonstrate the difference between meiosis and mitosis.
Day 1: Acquired vs. Inherited?
Activity: Watch this PPT
When you are done fill out the worksheet. We will go over the answers as a class. Be prepared to shared out.
Day 2: Pedigree chart
As a class we will go over the rules needed to make a pedigree chart. You will then construct f first a practice drawing and when it is correctly done you will make a final draft using a ruler for straight lines. Pick one trait that is easily recalled. Examples can include eye color, hair color, tallness, shortness, baldness, freckles, dimples, right vs. left handed or a trait of your choice.
Day 3: Genetic Traits and Variations Lab
Today we are going to take a survey of our class to see how many of your classmates have certain traits. One trait we will be investigating can be kind of gross-beware:)
Activity: Graph the number of students with each trait AND the % percentage of students with each trait. You can make this on one graph too! You can have 2 y-axis titles! Wow
Day 4: DNA
Activity: Watch the DNA PPT and fill in the worksheet.
Activity: Cut out the three flaps (DNA, Chromosomes and Genes) Glue these into your ISN so that the flap is glued and you can write under the flap. Cut out or write the appropriate sentence under the correct heading. Check your answer with my ISN answer key to make sure you are correct before gluing into your ISN.
Day 5: DNA Double Helix
Activity: We will take turns reading the DNA: Double Helix text. Make sure you have a highlighter as we will be highlighting important facts in the text. When you are done use the text to answer the questions. Color the DNA Double Helix the proper colors as indicated in the text.
Day 6. Modern Genetics
Activity: We are going to watch a video called, Modern Genetics. Write response answers on the movie worksheet.
Day 7: How to make a Punnett Square
Activity: Together we are going to learn how to make a Punnet Square.
Day 8: Mitosis Web Quest to complete this assignment
